Obviously by writing a book entitled “White Men Can’t Hump,” I bet you think you know where I’m heading with the “L Word.” Nope, sorry folks, this is not about Showtime’s Lesbian show The “L Word”. Like I said in “White Men Can’t Hump,” never judge a book by its cover (or a blog by its title). Though I must admit, one of my favorite Lines in “White Men Can’t Hump” is: “If you truly want to be Multi-Dimensional, you have to become a Lesbian trapped in a man’s body.” That was just my way of telling men that to be a great Lover, one must evolve mentally and emotionally, as well as physically. Ironically, that same kind of evolution is required to become a great Leader. Having the mental capacity to harness one’s emotions requires a personal evolution that most men gradually begin to make in early childhood. At a time when our nation required responsible Leadership, we were treated to emotional outbursts and physical threats such as: “Smoke’em out” and “Bring’em on.” It’s easy to say “Smoke’em out” and “Bring’em on” when someone else’s ass is gettin’ shot at. When our nation required a Commander-in-Chief, we were treated to the behavior of a cheer-Leader. Which brings me to a few other things that “L” stands for.

L is for LEADERS: Leaders are elected to Lead, but for some reason our nation forgot that Leaders have also been known to mis-Lead. Take for instance the ILL-Funded Intelligence of the Clinton Administration. This was supposedly one of the reasons the attacks on 9/11 occurred (never mind being told bin Laden determined to strike U.S.). That same ILL-Funded Intelligence suddenly became “Slam Dunk” Intelligence in the Lead up to the Iraq War. We still haven’t found any WMD, but we have found a very familiar place in history.

L is for L.B.J.: The Texan who sold us WMD is now face to face with the Texan who sold us The Tonkin Gulf. The Texan who stated “I’m Staying the Course” is now face to face with the Texan who stated “I’m not going to be the first president to Lose a war.” As we now find ourselves in the middle of someone else’s Civil War, I’m personally reminded of a place called Lebanon. My heart aches for our brave men and women who now Languish in the middle of another Middle East Civil War. I can feel their pain and despair, because I remember how Lonely I felt in 1983. Like them, I also made a raggedy makeshift Christmas Tree to get me thru the Holidays (while bombs exploded all around me). Once again we sit in the middle of someone else’s Civil War, and once again we need a true Leader to get us out. Many, many years ago our nation had such a Leader.

L is for LINCOLN: The Leadership of an Abraham Lincoln is what’s required to guide us through this mess, but don’t hold your breath. Just think back to that Lovely day on the U.S.S. Lincoln, and you’ll understand why I said don’t hold your breath. It was on the U.S.S. Lincoln that we were told “Mission Accomplished.” That mission evolved from the physical search for WMD to the emotional search for Democracy in the Middle East, and no one ever had the mental capacity to say “This mission will never be accomplished.” It’s true that Lincoln got us out of the Civil War by winning it, but his mission was clear from day one, and that war belonged to us and us alone. WMD was the illusion used to mis-Lead us, and Democracy in the Middle East became the illusion used to keep us there. Does anyone really believe that a “part of the world” that requires its women to be covered from head to toe, would ever embrace true democracy and therefore allow their women to run around panty-Less like “Lindsay, Britney, and Paris.”  The next illusion was “This is the central front on the war on terror.” This one sounds good, but if that’s the case, then where’s the national commitment (i.e., a Draft, and a repeal of the Tax Cuts for the rich). It’s nearly four years after “Mission Accomplished” and many of our troops still don’t even have adequate armor. All of these so-called missions were doomed to fail the day they were conceived, because they were conceived to mis-Lead. And now it’s too Late because we can’t Leave.

L is for LEAVE: They can deny why we went to Iraq, but they can’t deny why we can’t Leave. OIL!!! The present dilemma is as follows: We can’t stay there forever, but because of OIL, we can’t Leave.

A true Leader would recognize that Iraq is going to divide along ethnic and religious lines just like the former Yugoslavia, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

A true Leader would have the foresight to start getting us off of Middle Eastern OIL, and would tell all of his “Big OIL Buddies” the party is over (i.e., the Saudis, as well as the U.S. OIL companies).

A true Leader would tell the nation this is a golden opportunity for us to make a Brazil-Like conversion to ethanol.

A true Leader would create a new Legacy, by Looking for ways to Lessen the impact of his blunder.

L is for LEGACY: Having Led us into the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of this nation, the Last two years of his presidency will be about his Legacy, or Lack thereof. There’s no salvaging his presidential Legacy, but what about his personal Legacy. How can a man sleep at night knowing that hundreds, if not thousands more will die before he Leaves office? How can that same man Look in the mirror, when he knows that many of those who die will be National Guardsmen? After all, the National Guard is where he hid so he could avoid being sent to die for a mistake.

L is for LAST, as in “How do you ask a man to be the Last man to die for a mistake?” You can say what you want about John Kerry, but his words 35 years ago will begin to echo Louder and Louder over the next two years, because we’re about to Lose a Lot more Lives. This president doesn’t want to Leave Iraq and further destroy his Legacy; so by stretching this war out he can say the next president Lost it. How’s that for Leadership?

As you can see, over the next two years we’re going to be facing a lot of “L Words.”

On that note, always remember Humpers and Humpettes: “Life is too short to Hate.”
